She is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of New York State Ophthalmological Society and of American Society of Cataract and Refractive surgery. It’s fun, enlightening, and fascinating, and James is a genuinely nice guy and a superb teacher! Street photography was completely new to me-I can’t imagine a better introduction than James provided.
Occasionally, I would need to ask a person if I could take a photo James told me the best ways to approach him/her to get permission. Concentrating on my camera’s settings, he instructed me about using different modes and different exposures to capture images with the greatest impact. Taking me to some of the best intersections in the City for street photography, he taught me about zone focusing and about capturing images of people without being obvious. To say that I enjoyed it would be an understatement: James’ enthusiasm for photography and for New York City combines to create an exciting, rewarding, and unforgettable experience. I had never tried street photography, but it sounded intriguing, so I Googled James, learned about his street photography, ordered his books, and quickly signed up for one of his photo tours. “Always on the lookout for new ways to explore photography, I recently read an article about James Maher. Workshops can be done any time of day or night. I offer custom routes as well depending on your needs and interests, including straight street photography days. We will then take the subway to midtown, where we will photograph Bryant Park and the Empire State Building, the New York Public Library, Grand Central and the Chrysler Building and it’s exquisite lobby. The first half is spend exploring Central Park at dusk, including Bow Bridge, The Mall, The Lake, Bethesda Terrace and Arch, Sheep Meadow with an incredible Cityscape view, Gapstow Bridge, and much more. Route 3 (3-hour): My most popular night route covers more of the ‘iconic’ and ‘famous’ New York. We also visit the iconic Green-Wood cemetery, one of the most beautiful places in New York, located at the highest point in Brooklyn, with incredible views of the city. It’s an amazing, beat-up, and beautiful area of old factories of all types, old buildings, quirky things, a defunct railway, and most importantly a gorgeous waterfront with incredible views of Manhattan (and a great waterfront Park to see them from). Route 2 (3-hour): This new route focuses on Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront. On a 5-hour workshop you have the option to stop in Chinatown for a dumpling lunch.
While there are iconic views, this is less of the iconic ‘Chrysler Building’ skyscraper New York and more beautiful old buildings, incredible street photography with some of the most interesting people in the city, graffiti, colored walls, incredible alleys, gambling Chinese men and women in a park, and a lot of other things along those lines. Route 1 (3 or 5-hour): My most popular photo tour begins on Broadway and Houston street, heads south through Soho, explores Chinatown, visits the Manhattan Bridge and then heads back north through the Bowery and into the Lower East Side.
